BATS RETURN BUT PITCHING FALTERS AS DIABLOS ARE SWEPT BY T-BONES
KANSAS CITY, KS- A seven-run second inning was not enough for the Diablos to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Kansas City T-Bones, as El Paso feel in the series finale at Community American Ballpark by a final of 15-11.
The game was of the roller coaster variety, featuring a bonanza of runs throughout the first several innings before calming down in the middle frames and one final offensive explosion late. The T-Bones jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Diablos starter Colin Allen (0-4), as Brandon Jones and Ray Sadler hit back-to-back home runs.
El Paso finally saw its dormant offense come to life the next frame, scoring seven runs to take what would prove to be their only lead of the game. Enrique Cruz doubled in Nelson Teilon for the team's first run since Monday and then scored himself on Patrick Arlis' RBI hit a couple batters later.
Kory Drew and Maikol Gonzalez each added run-scoring singles before Uriak Marquez delivered the big blow, a three-run home run to right-center to give the Diablos a 7-3 lead after an inning and a half. The long ball was Marquez's first of 2012.
But Kansas City did El Paso one better in their half of the second, scoring eight runs to take a four-run lead of their own. Ray Sadler hit his second home run of the game, a three-run blast that put the T-Bones back in front 9-7, who would tack on two more runs in the inning and three more in the third to lead 14-7 after only three innings. Allen exited after getting just two outs in the second and finished with his least effective outing of the year, surrendering eight earned runs and recording just five outs.
After Diablos reliever Tim Adleman and T-Bones starter Nick Singleton (4-1) sped the game along by each throwing scoreless innings in the fourth, fifth and sixth, El Paso started to mount a comeback. Kory Drew hit his second home run of the season to begin the seventh inning, and several batters later Enrique Cruz added a three-run tater that made the score 14-11.
That was as close as the Diablos would get, however. Kansas City added one last insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Sadler. The T-Bones designated hitter finished with five RBI's and three extra base hits, with his sac fly falling just five feet short of the wall in left center field.
Kansas City finished with a season high 15 runs and 19 hits, stranding just seven runners over the course of the game.
The loss drops El Paso to 7-25 as the team heads back home to Cohen Stadium to take on the Laredo Lemurs for the first time away from Uni Trade Stadium. The Diablos have an off day on Thursday before beginning the series on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (MST) and can be heard on diablos.com.
