El Paso, TX - For the second consecutive game the Diablos trailed entering the final innings, but once again El Paso’s offense was able to put up crooked numbers as they scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal their 11-9 comeback win against Fort Worth Saturday night at Cohen Stadium.
El Paso (26-52) starting pitcher Luis Montano gave up two early runs in the top of the second and was taken out in the top of the third after suffering cramps in the inning as he was unable to continue. The Diablos brought in Jake McCarter from the bullpen.
McCarter pitched three innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three in the no decision. The Diablos brought in reliever Kyle Cremers to replace McCarter and Cremers kept the Diablos in the game with his strong outing.
The Diablos came back as they tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when right fielder Nelson Teilon had an infield base hit that brought in shortstop Maikol Gonzalez to tie the game at five.
Fort Worth (33-44) did not go away as in the next half inning, they scored two more runs as Steve Vranau had an RBI double and third baseman Will Calhoun delivered an RBI single to give the Cats a 7-5 lead after six innings.
El Paso scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to one as they trailed in 7-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. In the eighth, El Paso’s bats came alive as they were able to register five hits which lead to five runs and the difference in the game as they led 11-7 after the inning.
Cremers gave up a two-run home run to Ryan Patterson with two outs in the ninth inning to make the game 11-9. Manager Jorge Alvarez went to his bullpen and brought in Reyes Dorado for the last out. Dorado was able to retire Kelly Gulledge and seal the 11-9 victory for the Diablos.
Tomorrow is the final game of the series as they Diablos look to bust out the brooms and sweep Fort Worth. With a win El Paso will have back-to-back sweeps for the first time this year. Game time is set for 7:05 pm at Cohen Stadium.
