Grand Prairie, TX – For the second consecutive night the Grand Prairie AirHogs walked off with a victory against El Paso winning 6-5 on Saturday night at QuickTrip Park. The Daiblos came from behind to tie the game in the top of the ninth, only to see David Espinosa hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth. El Paso has now lost three out of their last four.
Grand Prairie would score all their runs on home runs in the game, hitting three home runs off Diablos pitching. They opened up the scoring in the first inning with three runs. After back to back walks, Greg Porter would hit a three run home run. El Paso got a run back in the second inning on a run scoring double by Rico Santana. The long ball would help the AirHogs again in the fourth inning when Antoin Gray hit a two run home run to increase the lead to 5-1. A Hector Bernal two run home run in the fifth inning was able to cut the lead to two.
The game remained 5-3 until the ninth inning when El Paso would load up the bases with one out. Back to back walks to Ponce and Reininger would bring in the tying runs. The Diablos still had the bases loaded with one out, but a pop out and a fly out would end the threat. Those runs ended up being big as in the bottom of the ninth with one out David Espinosa would hit a home run to right field to provide the winning run for the AirHogs.
Shaun Ellis started but struggled with control again. He would pitch six innings and allowed five runs on seven hits but also walked six. For the second consecutive night the Diablos turned to David Whigham in the bottom of the ninth but he could not hold down the AirHogs as he takes his second loss in as many nights.
El Paso had nine hits on the night. Arnoldo Ponce led the way going 3-4 with a walk and an RBI. He now has eight hits in the first three games of the series. Hector Bernal went 1-3 with his fourth home run of the season to extend his hit streak to 16 straight games. Benji Johnson turned in another multi-hit game going 2-4.
El Paso now will try and earn a split of the four game series. They send Aaron Kalb (2-4, 4.48) to the mound against Greg Krause (3-5, 3.81). Game time is set for 6:05. Fans can listen in by tuning to ESPN 1380 or online at www.diablos.com.
